A caverna é uma história de gente simples: um oleiro, um guarda, duas mulheres e um cão muito humano. Esses personagens circulam pelo Centro, um gigantesco monumento do consumo onde os moradores usam crachá, são vigiados por câmeras de vídeo e não podem abrir as janelas de casa.
É no Centro que trabalha o guarda Marçal. Era para o Centro que seu sogro, o oleiro Cipriano, vendia a louça de barro que fabricava artesanalmente na aldeota em que vive - agora, os clientes do Centro preferem pratos e jarros de plástico. Sem outro ofício na vida, Cipriano perde a razão de viver. E a convite do genro, muda-se para o Centro, essa verdadeira gruta onde milhares de pessoas se divertem, comem e trabalham sem verem a luz do sol e da lua.
Enquanto isso, embaixo dos diversos subsolos, os funcionários do Centro descobrem uma estranha caverna. Driblando a vigilância, Cipriano consegue entrar lá dentro. O que descobre é aterrador.
Nesta versão moderna do mito da caverna de Platão, José Saramago faz uma apresentação sutil da face cruel do mundo capitalista e tecnológico.

Ebook A caverna read Online! José de Sousa Saramago (pronounced [ʒuˈzɛ sɐɾɐˈmagu]) was a Nobel-laureate Portuguese novelist, playwright and journalist. He was a member of the Portuguese Communist Party.
His works, some of which can be seen as allegories, commonly present subversive perspectives on historic events, emphasizing the human factor rather than the officially sanctioned story. Saramago was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1998. He founded the National Front for the Defense of Culture (Lisbon, 1992) with among others Freitas-Magalhaes. He lived on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain, where he died in June 2010.

A foundation with his name was established in 2007; its main aims are cultural promotion, particularly of Portuguese literature and authors. The A Viagem do Elefante.
