When No-one's looking at the Zoo by Zana Frailon.
This is a very funny book about what a variety of animals in a zoo get up to when no-one's looking. As visitors pass by the animals, they are roaring, howling, chirping and relaxing. However, when no-one’s looking; the tigers are at a tea party, the seals are waltzing and the giraffes are water skiing!
The book includes large flaps to lift up, which reveal the animals’ funny antics. I have read this book many times, often by popular request, to Nursery children as young as two and they really enjoy it. Children can make predictions of what the animals will be doing before the flap is lifted. When they know the book well, they love shouting out what happens! So the book teaches good prediction skills and encourages children to imagine what will happen next. It is a fun book to read aloud, with colourful and bright pictures to keep children engaged.
The ending is particularly clever, as the animals ask the readers: when no-one’s looking what do you do? This sparks the imagination of even young children and they can reveal what they do - or would like to do - when parents or teachers are not looking. This is a good way to encourage creative and descriptive story-telling and writing. Nursery to Year one or two could also describe their own animals in a different setting perhaps a farm or a safari park. The children could then think of what their animals would get up to when no-one's looking.
