Read full description of the books:
This book is a very good example of a situation that places a family into poverty and what that family has to do to get by with their daily lives. Moving from one country to another can sometimes be financially draining, thus placing the person who comes here in poverty and making them homeless. This story outlines the struggles that this family, and many other homeless families, have to go through to survive.
This book offers children a different perspective on homelessness, for it shows them what it is like to have to live in a car and hide from authorities in order to get through each day. When a lot of people think about homelessness or see people sleeping on the sidewalk, that is all that they see. They do not see what it takes for them to even get to a point where they can sleep and rest. I feel that this story gives children that so that they can think more about the struggles that are taken just to find a place to rest. The story also outlines a path out of homelessness that may be hopeful for students reading this book that are homeless. They directly mention an organization called, the Health Fair, that helps families who work hard to find homes. The conclusion of the story is that the mother gets a job there, however, I feel that it was put in more as a reference to potential readers of options that are available for them and their families. The plot of the story centers around a lot of the struggles that they go through, which gives the readers a more genuine and non-stereotypical look at life as a homeless person.
The illustrations in this book pair very well with the plot as they add a very emotional aspect to the story. They follow key emotional points in the plot, such as crying, comfort, and living in the car. The style in which they are created gives off a somber and bleak feeling, which helps the reader to empathize with the characters in the story. I feel that adds to the plot, and the intention behind the story itself.
The characters in the book, and their experiences give the readers multiple perspectives on homeless life. The girl Zettie, hears about the other children calling her Junk Car Zettie, which is a negative perspective that makes fun of someone who is homeless. The readers are then given the perspective of someone Zettie, where what they are saying hurts her very much so for they do not know her situation. This is meant to teach readers of the effects that judgments and hurtful stereotypes can have on the people who are viewed in that way. The characters in the book are also portrayed as very hardworking and are immigrants. This challenges the stereotypes that immigrants are lazy, and that people who homeless are there because they do not work hard. By doing that, this story heavily challenges the deficit perspective that many people have about people in poverty.
